AMD
FX-60
Product Development
history
AMD
introduced new CPU on January 10, 2006, targeting the market
segment preoccupied by Pentium Extreme Edition 955, launched in
the end of 2005.AMD FX-60 was intended to
introduce the dual core technology in contrast to the former
version; the single core Athlon 64 FX-55 which had been the
most desired processor throughout the year 2005, especially by
the gamers. AMD FX-60 was a success and very soon left
the older version far behind, on account of its enhanced
performance by dint of the dual core technology. The new
processor works at the core clock rate of 2.6 GHz which was the
working frequency of the older version Athlon 64 FX-55. AMD
Athlon FX-60 is considered the best processor, ever produced by
AMD for the consumers.
What is a Dual Core
Processor?
A dual core
processor has two cores on one chip and it is like having two
microprocessors in one CPU. When installed in single processor
machines it converts into double core machine and when
installed in a dual core machine it converts into four core
machine. Having two microprocessors in one CPU enables
simultaneous performance of two tasks. Unlike dual core
processor which has two cores on one chip, the multi core
processor is different in that it has two separate
CPUs.

A dual core
processor is faster than single core processor and a multicore
processor is faster than dual core processor. AMD
FX-60 is a dual core processor with 170 % more performance
compared with a single core processor with the same power
consumption. Dual core processors do not need separate
motherboards and can be easily fixed in the exiting one. An
estimated price of FX-60 is $ 1100.
Which Motherboard is compatible with
AMD FX 60?
PCI Express
Chipset. AGP or any Socket 939 motherboard can host Athlon 64
FX-60.The motherboard however should be capable of supplying
sufficient power and this can be checked from the motherboard
manual or going to the motherboard manufacturer’s website.
There is no change in AMD FX-60 except that it
contains two Athlon 64 cores on a single die. Each core has MB
L2 Cache and a cross bar with allows access to the other cores
L2 Cache.

Does Clock speed indicate CPU
performance?
Time
required to convey an instruction, or to complete basic
computations termed as clock speed and expressed in Megahertz
or Gigahertz. One MGHZ= 1 million cycles /second and one
Gigahertz is one Billion cycles/second. With the chipset
remaining same it is a fair indicator but not reliable
otherwise.
